[#12 CLUB1.2FK Kushitani Kawaguchi Store] Victory won with one refueling!
The 23rd "Mote tai (Mote endurance)" was somehow held despite the COVID-19 pandemic. The schedule included official practice, participant registration, and vehicle inspection on Saturday, followed by qualifying and the final race on Sunday. The duration of the final race was shortened from 7 hours to 3 hours. A total of 77 teams were recruited, with no teams eliminated in the qualifying round. Despite these limitations, each team gathered to enjoy and compete in the 3-hour "Mote tai" in their own way.
The official qualifying was contested as usual by the combined times of the 1st Rider and the 2nd Rider, with #103 NMC × ATJ Racing recording the top times for both the 1st Rider and the 2nd Rider. They secured the pole position for the third consecutive year without any objections. In second place was #27 Team N-PLAN, in third place was #12 CLUB1.2FK Kushitani Kawaguchi Store, in fourth place was #32 Team SANMEI, in fifth place was BLUE EYES & LEGEND, and in sixth place was #65 Dan Run Club RT - Omotesando Real Estate Agency.
The weather forecast showed a chance of rain, but it was cloudy from the morning, and although the extreme heat from the previous day had subsided, it turned out to be a hot and humid day. After the free practice session for Riders 3 to 5 who did not participate in the qualifying, a riders' briefing was held in the pit lane, and then we finally moved on to the start procedure.
At the grid, the final checks before the race were conducted, and it was a usual sight to take commemorative photos with friends, but the difference this year was that everyone was wearing masks.
The "Mote tai" began with a Le Mans-style start, divided into two groups. The team that got off to a good start was #32 Team SANMEI from the 4th grid. Following them were #1 YSS Racing × MGR. Racing from the 9th grid, #26 HAPPY MONDAY, #27 Team N-PLAN, and #8 Maserati Makuhari & NR & Gumcho, while the pole position #103 NMC × ATJ Racing fell slightly behind. Speaking of falling behind, #12 CLUB 1.2 FK Kushitani Kawaguchi from the 3rd grid stalled their engine and had to start from the back of the first group.
Although #103 NMC × ATJ Racing got off to a slow start, they took the lead on the opening lap and led the race. #32 Team SANMEI, #27 Team N-PLAN, and #1 YSS Racing × MGR. Racing formed the top group following them. They were steadily increasing their laps, but on the 9th lap, a safety car was deployed to recover a crashed vehicle at Victory Corner. The safety car entered the pits after 13 laps were completed, and the race was restarted. This safety car ended up benefiting #12 CLUB1.2FK Kushitani Kawaguchi Store, which had gotten off to a slow start.
After one hour had passed, many teams began to enter the pits. At this point, #1 YSS Racing x MGR Racing had overtaken #32 Team SANMEI and was in the lead, but by the time the race reached the halfway mark at 1 hour and 30 minutes, #12 CLUB1.2FK Kushitani Kawaguchi Store had taken the top position. In third place was #56 TEAM LANG with MRSK, and the time loss due to refueling was starting to significantly affect the rankings.
With one hour remaining, the teams that made one pit stop were occupying the top positions. Among them, #12 CLUB1.2FK Kushitani Kawaguchi Store and #1 YSS Racing × MGR Racing stood out, with these two battling for the lead. With less than 30 minutes to go, the gap between the two teams was about 16 seconds. Since both teams were maintaining almost the same pace, the gap remained constant. In the end, #12 CLUB1.2FK Kushitani Kawaguchi Store pulled further ahead of #1 YSS Racing × MGR Racing to cross the finish line. #12 CLUB1.2FK Kushitani Kawaguchi Store achieved victory in the 'Mote tai' for the first time in six years.
"I think it was good that all three of us were able to run at a similar pace. I stalled the engine at the start, but it was a relief that the safety car came out. Since it was a three-hour race, I think it was tough for the two-cylinder machines, and perhaps that’s why we were able to win. Also, I believe the biggest factor in our victory was that Rider Sato did his best," said the first Rider, Nagano.
In the rear, #103 NMC × ATJ Racing was making a high-paced charge, passing #32 Team SANMEI with 10 minutes remaining to take 4th place. Furthermore, #103 NMC × ATJ Racing marked the best time on the final lap and passed #27 Team N-PLAN to finish 3rd at the checkered flag. #27 Team N-PLAN finished in a frustrating 4th place, while #32 Team SANMEI took 5th. In 6th place was the highest NST Ninja, #932 APPRISE Akuzawa Automobile Yumomi, followed by #65 Dan Runbu RT Omotesando Real Estate in 7th, #61 Nakamura Engine Laboratory as the highest NST CBR in 8th, and #87 CLUB Green Bird +P as the highest NST R25 in 9th. In the NST G310R, #57 Santoku RT Fan Factory Risshu @ zip was the highest, and in WS, #69 Riding Sports Fire C was the highest.
