The 15th commemorative tournament of K-TAI has arrived. On August 30 (Sun), a 7-hour endurance enjoy class was held, with 95 karts participating. It showed an excitement worthy of the finale of the 2015 Twin Ring Motegi's four major endurance events.
In the morning, it was raining steadily, but by the time the briefing started, it had mostly stopped, and the track was drying. By the time we started, the rain had stopped, but there were still wet patches on the track. Divided into two groups, we entered the rolling lap and started towards the goal 7 hours ahead at the scheduled time of 9:30. The first to exit Turn 2 was the pole position holder, #38 TeamKRS-DAI & MKS. Following them were #7 TOUSOU RS, #4 KRR, #75 RFAOYAMA Sake Powers, #22 NRT-BIREL, #196 Team IMA OMSC, and #53 538-Racing. They continued as a group, swapping positions, and the opening lap saw #22 NRT-BIREL returning in the lead. Following were #38 TeamKRS-DAI & MKS, #7 TOUSOU RS, #75 RFAOYAMA Sake Powers, and #10 OREGA RACINGA at Gen. After that, #4 KRR took the lead and began to pull away slightly. A light drizzle had started right after the start, but the line was almost dry. However, after 1 hour and 26 minutes from the start, as the rain intensified, more karts began to go off course, prompting the safety car to come out. Seeing this, many teams entered the pits. Refueling, tire changes, and the pit became a chaotic scene.
After that, the #29 Revue RT Thursday Meeting took the lead, followed closely by #72 Onigiri Racing, creating a one-on-one battle scenario.
However, after 5 hours, the top positions were rapidly changing with the timing of pit stops for #29 RAVE RT Thursday Meeting, #72 Onigiri Racing, #4 K.R.R, and #2 Hayakoba Racing.
As we approach the last hour, #4 K.R.R has completed 106 laps and is entering the 107th lap in the lead. #72 ONIGIRI RACING and #2 HAYAKOBA RACING are following closely on the same lap. Just after that, #4 K.R.R enters the pits for the 8th time, allowing #72 ONIGIRI RACING to take the lead, but #72 ONIGIRI RACING also goes into the pits, and #2 HAYAKOBA RACING rises to the top. Then, with 37 minutes remaining, #2 HAYAKOBA RACING makes its final pit stop. With 34 minutes left, #29 REVE RT Thursday Group rises to the top with 114 laps completed. #4 K.R.R follows in second place, 55 seconds and 573 milliseconds behind, while #72 ONIGIRI RACING returns to the track in fourth place after finishing its pit work.
With less than 30 minutes remaining, the #37 TeamKRS-DAI & MKS in third place and the #4 K.R.R in second place entered the pits, while the #29 RAVE RT Thursday Meeting, which was leading, pitted with 22 minutes left. This allowed #2 Hayakoba Racing to rise to the top with less than 20 minutes remaining, entering the 119th lap. The #72 Onigiri Racing followed 8.6 seconds behind, but the lap times of #2 Hayakoba Racing were superior, and the gap continued to widen.
In wet conditions, #2 Hayakoba Racing, which maintained a good average, was the first to complete 125 laps and received the checkered flag.
"I think it was good that we were able to pit at the right time when the safety car came in, and that everyone was able to run at a good average without being distracted by the fast teams around us," said Yasushi Umashima from #2 Hayakoba Racing. Although the machine's setup was not perfect as they had just overhauled the engine and were doing break-in runs on Friday, they showed the most stable performance in the final event under wet conditions.
#72 Onigiri Racing finished with a time difference of 58 seconds and 002 seconds, #29 Revue RT Thursday Meeting with a time difference of 1 minute and 28 seconds and 164 seconds, #4 K.R.R with a time difference of 2 minutes and 08 seconds and 469 seconds, and #38 Team KRS-DAI & MKS with a time difference of 2 minutes and 52 seconds and 545 seconds, all completed 125 laps just like #2 Hayakoba Racing, resulting in 5 teams receiving the Most Laps Award for 2015.
Among the teams that completed the final event, the MVP, awarded to the team that fully enjoyed karting with the motto "Let's enjoy karting together" in the spirit of K-TAI, was selected as #17 3% CLUB@GEN, who enjoyed karting from the public practice. A sports kart engine was presented from r-kart.
